Hello everyone! YoshiKart here!
I'm sure you all know about Wiimmfi by now, a custom server that revives almost all aspects of the long gone Nintendo WFC Connection. One thing you may not know though, is that it also affects DS games!
Wiimmfi also revives the online capabilities of several DS games, and while this usually requires patching a ROM and running through a flashcard/similar stuff, a newer, way easier method has just been found, no hacking required! This way, you can play DS games online again! Let's jump in straight to the guide!
What You Need:
-Your console (Nintendo DS family, DSi family, Nintendo 3DS family)
-An internet connection/mobile hotspot with either WEP key or no password at all (*THIS IS IMPORTANT, IT WILL NOT WORK OTHERWISE!)
-Mario Kart DS game cartridge
*This is due to the Nintendo DS only supporting these types of connections at the time. Most modern modems/routers won't be able to bring a DS game online. For this reason, I suggest you use a mobile hotspot with no password or a guest network, which has no password required to access. With that out of the way, let's go!
Step 1: Setting up your network
First things first, you need to set up your connection for the game. If your modem/router has a Guest Network of sorts or an option to make the password type open (no password) or WEP, make sure to change it to that in your router's settings, which are usually on a website. In this case I use my phone's mobile hotspot.
Make sure your internet is good enough for this kind of stuff too! :P
Step 2: Connecting on your console
Alright, now here comes the fun part! Turn on your Nintendo 3DS, and enter Mario Kart DS (or the game you want to play online on), and go to the wifi menu. Here, you should have an option to access the Nintendo WFC Settings, which will take you to the connection settings menu for the DS.
Here, tap on the big blue button, and on any of the available spots that say 'none'. Then, tap on the first option (Search for an access point) and wait for the console to look for networks. If your network you set up in step 1 is listed, tap it, do a connection test, and make sure it works!
After that, go to it's settings (the 'none' button you tapped earlier should be 'Ready' now) and look for the 'Auto-Obtain DNS' setting. Disable it, and you should get the option to type in a Primary and Secondary DNS. Type these 2 addresses there:
220.127.116.11 (Primary DNS)
18.104.22.168 (Secondary DNS)
Save settings, do a connection test again if you want, and exit the menu to hop on back to the game.
It's possible that during this process you may encounter several errors. These are the ones I know of and encountered, and their solution.
The console finds the access point, but fails to connect - This could be because of invalid settings in your network. Change some of them (depends differently on network) and try again.
The access point requests a WEP key, I put it and the console tells me it's invalid - That means the network's key is actually not WEP. Be sure it is that or no password.

My game either freezes or gives me error codes 61010 or 20110 while in the 'Connecting to Nintendo WFC Screen' - This is an error you're very likely to encounter, even after the solution I listed. However, you can prevent the game from freezing and reduce a lot the appearance of these errors by deleting all your friends off the friend list in the Records menu. This includes online and local friends, as they are saved when you have a match with them. If you keep encountering the codes after that, just keep trying. It might be your network too.
I get error 85020 or 94020 when looking for players in any category - Either the MASTER server is down, which means you'll have to wait it out, or your network is having issues, most likely the second one.
I get error code 86420 - This means you need to enable DMZ on your network. This can be done following this video right here , but be sure to be on the Nintendo DS Connections screen, and not on the 3DSs!

If you get any other error codes tell me so I can find a solution and add them, or if you manage to solve them as well tell me that too! Any help is appreciated ^-^

And that's that! With the open network you set up, you can now hop on online on several DS games and play again like it's 2007! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Be aware that finding players can take a while, as not many people are frequently on the servers. You can use this page on the Wiimmfi website to see the games with active players at the moment, and see if you can land a match! Or, post your friend code so you always have people to play with! I hope this guide helps you, and brings more people to play MKDS and other DS games online! My friend code for this game is in my bio if you want to race ;)
That's all from me, thanks for reading and i'll see you all in the race track!
This is YoshiKart, signing out!
